RLT Cinema: Everlast’s “What It’s Like”

Today’s feature on RLT Cinema is Everlast’s “What It’s Like.”  Released eleven years ago, “What It’s Like” tells the story of three broken people in the midst of broken circumstances.  I honestly didn’t like the tune when it first came out because I didn’t dig Everlast’s style.  And I still don’t like the song musically.  But the lyrics are gritty and truthful.  They reveal the ugliness of poverty, drugs, and abortion to the listener, asking them to “walk a mile in their shoes.”

The church has been far too eager to cast judgment on those in such situations.  If we’re serious about being change agents for the kingdom of God, we need to start taking light into dark situations and descending into the pain of those broken by sin and life.  Everlast’s song reminds us to do just that.

About Aaron

Aaron is a follower of Jesus. He's married to his smokin' hot wife Laura and is the father of three adorable girls. He enjoys a robust cigar, a complex root beer, a good movie, writing, football, thought-provoking books, and rousing discussions about subjects you're not supposed to talk about (like theology and politics). Religious people irritate him (because he once was one). He's on a quest to find the perfect dry rub and sauce for ribs.
